    Cagiva Mito 125 (2000 – 2001)

The Cagiva Mito 125: a bike that demands to be ridden with precision and flair. Its potent two-stroke engine produces over 30bhp at 11,000rpm, making it one of the most exciting small-displacement motorcycles on the market.

A skilled rider will appreciate the Mito’s exceptional handling and responsiveness, while its sleek styling and advanced cycle parts make it a standout in its class.

But be warned: hesitation is not an option with this bike. Its high-revving engine requires a firm hand on the throttle at all times to extract maximum performance.

Its latest iteration, dubbed the Mito Evolution or EV, boasts significant updates and refinements that justify Cagiva’s claim of a virtually new motorcycle.

  • Cagiva Canyon 500 (1998 – 2001)

    Cagiva Canyon 500 (1998 – 2001)

The Cagiva Canyon 500 is a stylish single-cylinder motorcycle that packs a punch with its aggressive fairing design and spacious saddle. However, beneath the surface lies a more complex story.

The Rotax engine, while initially promising, reveals itself to be outdated and underpowered, struggling above 65mph. This, combined with non-adjustable front forks and a squishy rear monoshock, makes for a less-than-refined riding experience.

But what’s most concerning is the Canyon’s reputation for reliability issues – starter motors failing, electrical gremlins, and engine stutters are all too common occurrences. In a crowded market of single-cylinder commuters and trail bikes, the Cagiva Canyon 500 simply can’t compete with its peers.

  • Cagiva Gran Canyon 900ie (1997 – 98)

    Cagiva Gran Canyon 900ie (1997 – 98)

Cagiva’s Gran Canyon 900ie embodies the Italian marque’s rich heritage, thanks to its close ties with Ducati. At its heart lies the renowned air-cooled V-twin engine, a staple of Ducati’s 900SS model.

The Ducati-supplied motor is reworked by Cagiva, featuring their own airbox and exhaust system, as well as Weber-Marelli fuel injection specifically tuned for this application. This potent combination delivers strong performance courtesy of Desmodromic valves, though they do require attention to maintain.

In terms of design, the Gran Canyon exudes an attractive, striking aesthetic with neat bodywork that belies its size compared to competitors. Its long travel suspension provides a comfortable ride on pavement, although some may find the front brakes wanting.

Taking the 900ie out for a spin reveals a motorist’s delight – the air-cooled V-twin now benefits from flawless fuel injection and a lighter flywheel, imbuing it with a free-revving character. The six-speed gearbox is a masterclass in shifting slickness, making clutchless downshifting a breeze.

The 900ie returned an impressive 42.5 miles per gallon during testing, which should rise to around 45 mpg in normal riding conditions. With over a decade of refinement behind it, the Gran Canyon 900ie is without doubt a well-sorted and capable machine that leaves nothing wanting.

    Cagiva River 600 (1996 – 98)

Cagiva’s Claudio Castiglioni is a man who wears many hats, but one thing remains constant: his commitment to excellence. As co-owner of this Italian motorcycle manufacturer, he’s known for immersing himself in every aspect of the business.

The Cagiva River 600 is a testament to Castiglioni’s dedication, with its debut taking place at the opulent Palace hotel in Varese, Italy. This bike may not be a high-performance powerhouse, but it’s crucial to Cagiva’s short-term success, and designed to appeal to commuters seeking a reliable and affordable ride.

The River 600 shares its powerplant with the Canyon, producing 34bhp from a single cylinder motor. While not built for speed, this bike excels in simplicity and cost-effectiveness, directly targeting Honda’s Revere and Yamaha’s Diversion with its no-frills approach to design.

As you take the handlebars of the Cagiva River 600, you’ll discover an engine character that’s perfect for navigating urban landscapes and short-haul tours, making it a solid choice for those who prioritize practicality over high-performance thrills.
