The Moto Guzzi V50 Monza, a middleweight marvel from the early 1980s, boasts a four-stroke, 90-degree V-twin engine with a longitudinally mounted, OHV configuration and two valves per cylinder.
This compact and lightweight motorcycle was the result of Lino Tonti’s innovative design, which retained the traditional V-twin layout while incorporating several technical advances over the larger twins.
The V50 Monza’s engine features a chain-driven central camshaft and pushrod-operated valves, with a dry clutch that utilizes one friction plate and a diaphragm spring for minimal spline wear and a smoother action.
With its Herron head design and high compression ratios, the V50 Monza delivers excellent fuel economy, but its small valves and sharply curved ports do restrict ultimate breathing.
