Two constant depression carburetors, a Bing 94/40/105-106 system, breathe life into the 980cc engine, which delivers a broad, smooth powerband that’s as much about torque as it is about peak horsepower.
Riding the RT is an exercise in refinement, with the engine pulling hard from just off idle and displaying a strong presence in the 3000-5000 rpm range. While it may fade slightly near its 7000 rpm redline, it provides more than enough oomph for accelerating and cruising at speeds up to 105 mph.
The RT’s engine character is its greatest charm, and it’s a shame that it may not entice new riders into the BMW Twins camp. However, for the faithful, this motorcycle offers a truly satisfying experience that’s as much about the ride as it is about the machine.
