The BMW K1100LT 16V is a tour de force in the world of motorcycle engineering, boasting a tubular space frame where the engine itself serves as a load-bearing component. This innovative design allows for a nearly unchanged K100 LT, but with a significant boost in performance, courtesy of the 74 kW/100 HP four-valve head. However, this engine was not without its quirks, particularly in the torque department, which suffered a notable dip between 4000 and 5000 RPM.
But fear not, dear rider, for BMW’s designers have once again worked their magic, introducing the updated 1100cc four-valve engine at the end of 1991. This behemoth of an engine, bored to 1092cc, boasts an impressive 100 HP, with the Bosch Motronic system updated to version 2.2 for added oomph. And while some vibrations may still be present, there’s no doubt that this is the superior engine in the K1100LT.
But the updates don’t stop there – a modified fairing now encloses the engine even more tightly, while the windscreen position can be changed electrically, a feature that’s sure to please even the tallest of riders. And with the fairing moved 30mm forward, there’s now more legroom than ever before. Add to this the option of a controlled catalytic converter, available for a mere 850 DM, and the K1100LT is poised to reclaim its top spot as the ultimate touring motorcycle.
